Toyota GR Yaris Rallye

In the Targa Tasmania Tarmac Rally earlier this year, I had the pleasure of seeing the much talked about and very exciting Toyota GR Yaris Rallye close-up, not only when Steve Spada and Doug Furney’s entry was stationary at lunch breaks but also when it passed me on numerous occasions!!!!

Introduced in late 2020, the Toyota GR Yaris combines a 1.6 litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that pumps out 200kW of power through a six-speed manual transmission all-wheel drive system in a lightweight package. It’s reported top speed is 230 km/h and will get from 0-100km/h in 5.2sec, and then on top of that you have the homologation special Toyota GR Yaris Rallye which takes it all to another level.

Check out Top Gear’s Chris Harris putting it through its paces, even as a drift car:

But the question on may peoples lips is how does the GR Yaris stack up against the legendary Subaru WRX sti, a car that was created for the 1992 World Rally Champion and to this day is still one of the most exciting cars to drive.

This carsales.com.au article and video looks at the two cars:

I’ve got a feeling we’re going to be seeing and hearing a lot more of the Toyota GR Yaris in the very near future.
