A Mustang conquered the mountain, but can it beat the new Supra GT

Last month’s Bathurst 1000 was another race to remember. It had all the usual excitement, the crashes, the tension and (as has become the norm), it all came down to the last lap, which is a long way from when Peter Brock used to win by 6 laps. Even then it took another couple of weeks to finalize the results totally.

Anyhow while the race was on, I was watching the Mustangs (which are far more Mustang by name than nature!!!), and I thought how successful the new Mustang has been for Ford Australia. Having driven a few of them, I really like them, they’re big, bold and very American, and in the standard form handle and perform very well.

Consequently, I was intrigued to read a recent article on Carsales.com.au that compared the latest $66,000, 5 litre V8 Mustang GT against the much-anticipated $85,000 3 litre turbo 6 Toyota GR Supra GT.

In case you’re wondering, the GR on the Supra stands for Gazoo Racing, Toyota’s performance arm that is similar to Ford Performance.

Also, if you want to buy a Supra, you may be waiting a while as the first allocation of 100 Supra’s sold out in just seven minutes in a randomized online ballot in June, and apparently for the 300 vehicles that Toyota have for sale in the first 12 months, there’s nearly 5000 prospective buyers lining up.

Sounds a lot like when Ford released the Mustang in Australia several years ago.
