South Melbourne Porsche & Coffee Festival grows into Grand Prix week institution

Home » South Melbourne Porsche & Coffee Festival grows into Grand Prix week institution

The annual South Melbourne Porsche & Coffee festival has evolved from a casual enthusiast meet into one of Melbourne’s biggest automotive gatherings, once again taking over the streets ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.

What began as a small meetup among owners has quickly grown into a major community event, and in 2026 it reached another milestone with Porsche joining as an official partner while celebrating 75 years of Porsche in Australia.

Held around Clarendon Street in South Melbourne, the free event attracted thousands of spectators and hundreds of cars, transforming the neighbourhood into a showcase of Stuttgart’s finest – from early classics through to the latest track-focused machinery.

While owner cars formed the bulk of the lineup, Porsche brought along several serious track weapons to anchor the event.

Among the highlights were a pair of Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport racers finished in Penske-inspired liveries reflecting the Penske-owned local dealerships.

They were joined by the striking Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport 25 – an ultra-rare model limited to just 30 units worldwide. Producing around 690 horsepower, the car is strictly designed for circuit use rather than public roads.

Another standout was the raw-carbon GT2 RS Clubsport, reinforcing just how serious Porsche’s customer racing program has become.

Beyond the official display, the real appeal of Porsche & Coffee came from the breadth of privately owned cars filling the surrounding streets.

Modern collector models like the 991 Speedster and Sport Classic appeared alongside multiple generations of the legendary Porsche 911 GT3 – ranging from early 996 examples through to the latest GT3 Touring and GT3 RS.

Classic machinery was equally well represented. A rare 924 Carrera GT drew plenty of attention, while several pristine Porsche 911 (964 generation) cars highlighted the clean, understated design language of the early 1990s.

Elsewhere, keen-eyed enthusiasts could spot some particularly special metal tucked into the side streets, including a modified 996 Gemballa GTR 650 Evo, multiple 993 Turbos, and a beautifully restored Porsche 356 Speedster.

At the opposite end of the spectrum sat one of Porsche’s newest adventure-inspired models, the Porsche 911 Dakar.

Part of the event’s charm is how the local community embraces it.

Cafés and small businesses across South Melbourne opened early and joined the festivities, with popular stops including Alonso’s Donuts and Huff Bagelry helping fuel the crowds as visitors wandered between rows of cars.

The result is less a traditional car show and more a relaxed street festival – one that now feels like the unofficial start of Melbourne’s Grand Prix week.

With Porsche itself now supporting the event and the crowds continuing to grow, South Melbourne Porsche & Coffee has firmly established itself as a Melbourne motoring institution.
