McLaren Revives Bruce McLaren’s Original Road Car Dream

Home ยป McLaren Revives Bruce McLaren’s Original Road Car Dream

McLaren will unveil a stunning piece of its history at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, revealing a one-off M6GT restored by McLaren Special Operations (MSO).

Built using original body moulds, archive drawings and period-correct components, the project brings founder Bruce McLaren’s original road car vision back to life.

Long before the McLaren F1, 750S or Artura, there was the M6GT.

Derived from McLaren’s Can-Am racing programme, the M6GT was Bruce McLaren’s personal vision for a road-going supercar, combining race-bred engineering, lightweight construction and striking design. Bruce himself regularly drove the prototype to meetings and racing events, making it the true starting point of McLaren’s road car story.

The one-off restoration has been painstakingly rebuilt by McLaren Special Operations using original moulds and historic reference materials.

Every detail was approached with authenticity in mind, from the period-correct V8 engine and gearbox to the restored suspension components and handcrafted interior. Even original-style rivets, bespoke trim materials and the unique windscreen profile have been faithfully recreated.

The result is not a modern interpretation, but a genuine tribute to Bruce McLaren’s original vision.

The restored M6GT is finished in a bespoke colour known as Colnbrook White, named after the facility where Bruce developed many of his road car ideas.

Paired with a green interior, the colour combination honours the livery of Bruce’s first Formula 1 car and serves as a subtle nod to McLaren’s earliest racing heritage.

The M6GT will feature prominently at McLaren House during the Goodwood Festival of Speed, alongside icons including the M8A Can-Am racer, McLaren F1, W1 hypercar and the latest Artura and 750S models.

Together, they showcase the evolution of McLaren from Bruce McLaren’s earliest ambitions through to the company’s modern supercar and motorsport achievements.

The M6GT is more than a historic car. It is a reminder of the vision that shaped one of the world’s most respected performance brands.

More than 50 years after Bruce McLaren first imagined a road-going McLaren, his original dream returns to centre stage at Goodwood, connecting the company’s remarkable past with its future.
