A new Porsche racing category honouring the life and racing achievements of Australian Porsche racing legend, Peter Fitzgerald, will debut at the 2026 Winton Festival of Speed, July 23 – 26.
The Fitzy Cup is a fever dream of Peter Fitzgerald built and raced Porsches, saluting his most recognisable cars from 1990 to 2010.
Some of Fitzgerald’s most iconic Porsches include the pair of Falken liveried Porsche 968 Clubsports that raced in the 1993 Bathurst 12 Hour, as well as the striking Porsche 993 RSCS that graced Australian circuits in the mid to late 90s.
Alongside cars with a direct association with Fitzgerald, category organisers welcome all other race-spec Porsches of the same era to join The Fitzy Cup for its inaugural event.
Additionally, an invitational class for pre-1990 Porsches with an association with Fitzgerald has been established, opening the door to models such as G Series 911s, as well as 944 Turbos.
Fitzgerald was a much loved legend of Australian motorsport. After winning the Production Car Championship in 1987, he remained a consistent front-runner and popular character in the Australian motorsport scene, before notably winning the maiden Bathurst 12 Hour in 1991.
Having left a lucrative accounting profession to focus on his fledgling Fitzgerald Racing Services operation, Fitzgerald continued his association with the Bathurst 12 Hour, before competing in GT-P and Nations Cup pre and post millennium.
He featured in the inaugural season of Porsche Carrera Cup Australia in 2003, racing in the popular one-make series until 2006.
Son, Christian Fitzgerald, has given his family’s blessing for the category to be named after his father, noting it will be the perfect platform to celebrate and honour his dad’s racing legacy.
“Dad’s connection with the Porsche community was more than just competition, it was about camaraderie, perseverance and a pure love of racing.” Said Fitzgerald.
“His motto was ‘never say die’, something that motivated him through tough races, business challenges and, ultimately, his health battles.
“Having The Fitzy Cup named after him at the WFOS is an incredible honour, one that the family and I know would have meant so much to him. It celebrates the values he stood for and the legacy he leaves behind.”
The Fitzy Cup is designed to honour and celebrate Fitzgerald’s legacy and achievements in a manner befitting the man – passionate, grounded, generous and above all, Porsche obsessed.
It affords a unique opportunity to pull the covers off some of Australia’s most special race-spec Porsches and join forces on track in a way Fitzgerald would have wanted.
Entrants of The Fitzy Cup will receive a full day of Free Practice on Thursday July 23, before launching into a robust qualifying and racing schedule spanning Friday 24 to Sunday 26 July.
Competition sessions consist of Qualifying and a Sprint Race on Friday, before a pair of 20min races each taking place on Saturday and Sunday.
The Fitzy Cup will be able to accommodate up to 35 entries.
