As we’re into 2025, it’s interesting to look back at 2024 to see what did and didn’t sell in the new car market.
With the uncertainty and craziness of the COVID 19 years behind us, industry sources have reported that a record 1,237,287 new cars were sold in 2024, an increase of 1.7% on the 2023 numbers, with the Ford Ranger ute being the most popular new car purchased, followed by the Toyota Rav 4 SUV.
The numbers are based on the quantity of vehicles delivered and registered, with the most popular car brand being for the 23rd year in a row, Toyota with a record 241,296 which was marginally greater than their previous high of 238,938 in 2008. Ford came in second spot with 100,170 new vehicles sold, ahead of Mazda in third with 95,987 sales.
The increase in Toyota’s Rav4 Hybrid popularity, pushed the sales of hybrid cars up 76% to 172,696 and plug in hybrid sales up 100% to 23,163 while fully electric vehicle sales had a small increase of 4.7% mainly due to a 17% drop in Tesla sales to 38,347 cars.
This carsales.com.au article also looks at the 2024 new car figures highlighting huge increases in Suzuki Jimny sales, fall in the big ute category, surge in hybrid and what’s in store for us in 2025 with the ‘New Vehicle Efficiency Standard’ coming into effect from January 1st.
