Greg Rust Talks with Dan Ricciardo

Greg Rust is one of Australia’s most popular sport commentators. He’s worked on Sydney radio and national television for nearly 30 years and has called almost every form of motorsport Australia has to offer.

After cutting his teeth with SBS motorsport program Speedweek, Greg joined Channel 9’s commentary team for the final Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at the Eastern Creek in 1996 alongside 1980 Formula One World Champion Alan Jones and has since then has gone onto working on The Australian Touring Car Championship, V8 Supercars, Australian Formula One Grand prix, Gold Coast Indy, Moto GP, Red Bull Air Race, Super 2 Series and the 2014 Winter Olympics, just to
name a few.

Most of us know him affectionately as ‘Rusty’ and to the late great World Motorcycle Champion Barry Sheane he was ‘Thrusta’ (it’s unknown as to where that one came from), but call him what you like, he certainly knows his motorsport and has access to all the right people in the sport.

Currently in association with Motorsport Australia (formerly CAMS) he Zoom Chats various motor racing identities like Australian Off-Road Champion Mark Burrow, FIA Formula 3 Championship driver Oscar Piastri and Finke Desert Racer Beau Robinson and they are great listening.

But it’s his most recent Zoom Chat with Formula One’s Daniel Ricciardo that I really enjoyed. It was a timely chat just before the Eifel Grand Prix at the Nürburgring in Germany where Daniel talks about getting close to a podium finish and what that would mean to the Renault team. Of-course the following weekend he did exactly that, a well-deserved third place behind Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton and Renaults first podium since 2011.
