“Drive to Survive – Series 3” is now on Netflix

Drive to Survive is a documentary series which is a collaboration between Netflix and Formula One.

The first series covered the 2018 Formula One World Championship and had everyone talking due to the unparalleled access to the drivers, team principals and owners like we’d never seen before. It even looked into Formula One’s own management which until then had been sacred and secret ground.

The end result turned out to be not only a huge viewing success for the ten-part television series, but also a great marketing tool for Formula One itself. So, no surprises when a second series was commissioned which followed the 2019 World Championship.

Series 2 again had amazing access to all in the championship, this time including Ferrari and Mercedes who had not allowed Netflix to film their inner circle in the first series. Again, it was a huge success.

When the 2020 F1 World Championship came around, no one could have predicted what a year it was going to be and what great material Netflix would have for Season 3 of ‘Drive to Survive’. At one stage it looked as if it wouldn’t eventuate as the Championship itself had a huge cloud over it.

But as history shows, it did go ahead despite the COVID-19 Pandemic and this series of ‘Drive to Survive’ (which was released in late March) covers it all.

The effects of the pandemic on the Championship, Daniel Ricciardo’s dissatisfaction at Renault, Ferrari’s struggle to be competitive, the rise of Lawrence Strolls BWT Racing Point team and Romain Grosjean’s fiery crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix are just some of the things covered in this series. In fact, if you didn’t know better, you could say the script came out of a Hollywood film studio.
