In September last year, Lamborghini launched it latest hypercar, the Sian at the Frankfurt Motor Show and not surprisingly, the press were very excited about it.

But before we get into the car, so to speak, it’s important to understand what the latest motor marketing buzz word, Hypercar, actually means and how does it differ to a Supercar? Well apparently only a few supercars are hypercars, but all hypercars are supercars, they generally have a very low production run, much lower than supercars, a minimum seven-figure price tag and ridiculous performance. Oh and they have some form of hybrid technology integrated into the drive train.

For example some of the most recently released Hypercars are the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, Aston Martin Valkyrie, Mercedes AMG One and the McLaren Speedtail.

That sorted, the Lamborghini Sian is most definitely a hypercar, it has a price tag of somewhere around $8million Australian, and amazingly all 63 cars to be manufactured were sold very quickly.

The reason only 63 will be made is to recognize 1963, the year that tractor and farm equipment manufacturer Ferruccio Lamborghini built the first Lambo, who incidentally having built the company up, sold it in 1973. Since then Lamborghini has gone bankrupt once, had various owners including two sugar mogul brothers, a group of Indonesian Investors, Chrysler, Audi and it now comes under the Volkswagen Group of Companies.

Anyhow, re the Hybrid technology, the Sian is powered by a 6.5 litre 602kW V12 motor, which gets from 0 – 100km/h in 2.8 seconds and a 25kW electric motor ……
Yes that’s right a 25kW electric motor which you may assume can power the cigarette lighter or an aftermarket accessorized hairdryer, but you’ll be wrong. Instead of using batteries, the Sian uses a super-capacitor to store energy in a very lightweight system that powers an electric motor that allows for petrol free manoeuvres like parking and reversing out of your driveway!

So, although I’m not sure that it’s a fully fledged hybrid, I am sure that it’s an amazing looking car, with sensational performance figures and which, for obvious reasons will never be seen in my garage!!!!
