2021 Super Bowl Television Commercials

For many years I’ve been an avid follower of the American NFL, and through family connections in the states a New England Patriots fan. Based in Boston, the Patriots have recently been very successful having played in 9 Super Bowl playoffs over the last twenty years and winning 6 of them, mainly due to the combination of super coach Bill Belichick, and star quarter back Tom Brady.

Brady left the Patriots at the start of 2020 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and ended up playing in and winning the 2021 Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs, and as always, I was glued to the television.

I try to watch the Super Bowl with feeds directly from America, not only for the spectacle of the game, but to see the television commercials which are made specifically for the broadcast. With enormous production budgets, it’s interesting to see what ‘big names’ appear in them, for example this year Mathew McConaughey was promoting Dorito’s, Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski – T-Mobile, John Travolta and daughter Ella – Lawn seed, while on the car front, Will Ferrell – GM Electric Vehicle, Bruce Springsteen – Jeep and Winona Ryder the all-electric Cadillac.

As a point of difference, this year Toyota featured US Para Olympian swimmer Jessica Long with no car, as well as Fords COVID theme encouraging all to ‘finish strong’ and again no car. This carsales article looks at this year’s Superbowl car commercials, and the money associated with them I reckon will make your eyes water.

Although not a Super Bowl commercial, and with no ‘Famous Faces’ to be seen, this Fiat 500L commercial produced in 2014 is still one of my favourites.
